Dear graduating senior:

High school graduation is time for celebration. It is also time for decision making, since you must decide soon on the possibilities for an eventual major, and a college which would provide the best opportunities. I am writing this letter to tell you about the exciting field of statistics and also about our program on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Statistics is a science of information gathering, data analysis and decision making. It is a discipline that blends the applied with the theoretical and our courses, programs, and faculty reflect this mix. You can take courses in survey sampling, experimental design, quality control, biostatistics, and modern data analysis, together with courses in mathematical statistics and probability theory. While all our majors combine application with theory, you can choose between a major in statistics and a joint major in mathematics and statistics. These courses provide an excellent preparation for careers in industrial statistics, actuarial science, biostatistics, and research.

The faculty of the Statistics Department include outstanding applied and theoretical statisticians and probabilists, covering a wide range of areas. Our department has been rated as one of the top statistics departments in the country based on the research of our faculty. The Mathematics Department is also among the very best in the nation.

The Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science Departments are located in Hill Center which boasts excellent computer facilities as well as an extensive mathematics, statistics, and computer science library.

We are eager to attract mathematically well-prepared and talented students. If you are interested and would like more information, please let us know. We can be reached by phone at 732-445-2693 or on the web page at "http://www.stat.rutgers.edu". We hope that you will plan a visit to the campus so that we can meet you. We also encourage you to take every opportunity to explore the special advantages which Rutgers, a distinguished state university, can offer you.

Sincerely yours,

Harold Sackrowitz
Professor of Statistics,
Undergraduate Director
